ABSTRACT

Gary plays with his origins in his autobiographical novels with a lot of irony and sarcasm. On the run from a painful past, the writer does not seek to reconstruct the traces of his roots from reliable details, but to conceal them, in order to discover them better, in the very sense of reinventing them. This deceptive mechanism is even more evident when it comes to dark references to childhood anti-Semitism. Although the Jewish element, emerging from the ashes of History, is connoted with a certain misfortune, it also benefits from a form of compensatory adjustment in and through the fiction. Once again, it is not a question for Gary of denying his belonging to Judaism, which coincides in a certain way with his coming into the world. On the contrary, he claims, at least in fiction, the freedom not to appropriate any identity.
