ABSTRACT

The process of appropriation of Shakespeare in Germany began at the end of the eighteenth century and reached its climax with the famous edition of the works translated into German edited by August Wilhelm Schlegel and Ludwig Tieck. While this so-called “Schlegel-Tieck” has remained a landmark to this day, the contribution of Tieck’s critical and dramaturgical commitment to the English author’s consideration as an integral part of German culture is not yet sufficiently valued. The essay attempts to present Tieck’s important work on Shakespeare in all its aspects, highlighting the central role that the English author has occupied in the entire life of the German Romantic poet.
