ABSTRACT

Moving from the hypothesis advanced in 1999 by Jean Mesnard, the study identifies in Paul Rogier Sibour, a French teacher active in Strasbourg between the seventeenth and eighteenth century, the «sieur du Plaisir» author, in the two-year period 1682-1683, of the sentimental novel La duchesse d’Estramène, and of the poetic narrative treatise Sentiments sur les lettres et sur l’histoire, avec des scrupules sur le style. A bio-bibliographic profile of the maître de langue is traced, pointing out the numerous attributive concordances that bind him to the writer of treatises and narrator, and reporting the existence of a seventeenth-century source that assigns to Sibour/Du Plaisir also another text, the short story Le Napolitain, published under a pseudonym (De Germont) in 1682.
