ABSTRACT

Marguerite Yourcenar’s theatre has always been little studied and it has never been a huge success, because it is considered more suitable for reading than it is for stage. In order to correct this widespread preconception, we tried to find useful information for the scene both in the plays paratext (prefaces, stage directions, footnotes) and in the text itself, where we can find hidden stage directions.
In this research, we found that stage directions, at the beginning almost absent, increase and become more accurate over the years, as if the author was more careful and aware of stage requirements. From one play to another, Marguerite Yourcenar didn’t just explore new subjects, but she experimented new stage effects for representing the only action that counts, man’s inner reality. This evolution in Yourcenar’s dramatic production proves that her plays are not naive literary exercises, but it is evident the effort to stage them.
